By celebrityHeadshots_Collage dogs, Happy, Lady & Lucy, of the King’s Life children’s book series about dog-friendly places. They sniff out the best of adventures at luxury hotels for kids and pets.

We’re honored to be invited to join Mrs. Claus to read stories to the children at The Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, tonight, this beautiful Christmas Eve, from 6pm – 9pm in the Main Lobby. While Mrs. Claus reads traditional tales, we’ll help read The Phoenician’s new book, Discover The Phoenician with Phoe-Phoe & Friends, written by our mother, Emily Randolph and photo illustrated by our father, Dan Merchant. We can’t wait to meet all the children, who we hope will give us a nibble of the their holiday cookies!

For those of you who will not be able to join us, we hope you will enjoy this new rendition of ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas, written by Emily for the little children staying at The Phoenician on Christmas Eve. To all of you, no matter where you are, Happy Holidays!

‘Twas The Night Before Christmas With Phoe-Phoe & Friends

‘Twas the night before Christmas, all are dressed to the nines,
To stay at The Phoenician and have a great time;
The resort shines bright in its holiday glow,
A fairyland decked with white lights and gold bows;
From the Jokake Inn to the top of the resort,
To the Cactus Garden to the Lobby’s Tea Court;
It sits at the base of famed Camelback Mount,
A setting quite fit for barons, queens and counts!
The desert’s beauty ’tis nothing to compare,
For it never needs snow to have that holiday air;
Parents, children and fluffy sweet dogs,
Will cozy ’round the resort’s Yuletide logs;
Carolers, cookies, hot chocolate galore,
With every fine touch, you’ll hunger for more!
To all, gather ’round, we’ve just begun,
To start this story and have our fun;
Without further pause, delay or ado,
Sit close, lean forward, hear a tale all true;
From a picture book, a legend just penned,
Called ‘Discover The Phoenician with Phoe-Phoe & Friends;’
You’ll meet Phoe-Phoe the rabbit and head bunny, too,
There’s no sweeter hare or a friend more true;
Though you might find her hoppy or in fact rather jumpy,
But one thing she’s never is melancholy or grumpy!
And then there’s Tut-Tut the turtle from blue Necklace Lake,
Who’s old and wise and enjoys the occasional tea cake;
And finally, there’s Charlie, with a big friendly mug,
He’s a bear, you see, that you can actually hug!
But, my goodness, what’s this? You look rather pale,
Your noses are wrinkly like you ate something stale!
Speak up, now’s the time, there’s not a moment to waste,
What’s your worry, speak clearly, slowly, not in haste;
Confide, oh please, this sudden loss of cheer,
And speak of what you so greatly fear;
What’s this, you quiver, quake and moan,
“How will Santa find us, if we’re not at home?”
Oh, dear ones, that’s easy, don’t squall,
Haven’t you heard that Santa knows everything and all?
He’ll always find you, no matter where you are,
Whether home, or close or further afar;
In fact, he’d say, why, everyone knows,
The Phoenician’s the place he wants to go!
It’s so true, he might never, ever wish to leave,
For there’s no better place to spend Christmas Eve!

Good Dogs Put Their Paws Up at The Benjamin, New York

Good dogs always welcome at The Benjamin's new goodDOG program

‘GoodDOGS’ always welcome at The Benjamin

By celebrityHeadshots_Collage dogs, Happy, Lady & Lucy, of the King’s Life children’s book series about dog-friendly places. They sniff out the best of adventures at luxury hotels for kids and pets.

It’s a lifelong dream of ours to go to New York City and run, like the royal rascals that we are, through Central Park and meet all the pooches that hang there. And should this wish come true, we’ll need a kingly place to put our paws up. The Benjamin sounds like just such a place! Their new goodDOG program includes welcome amenities provided by BarkBox, an in-room pet mini bar, around-the-clock access to an on-call veterinarian, new pet beds and more.  The Benjamin also doesn’t go in for that nonsense about size restrictions. All dogs of all sizes are welcome. We like that and wish more hotels would follow suit. There is a $50 pet fee per stay to deep clean post-stay to ensure the room is allergen-free for future guests. This is not exorbitant in our experience, especially considering how much you get. Here’s the scoop:

  • Barkin’ Great Amenities:

Upon arrival pooches receive a BarkBox, which is specific to the size of the pup.  Each BarkBox features between four and six treats, toys and hygiene products that are hand-selected and veterinarian-approved (the treats are made in the USA or Canada with all-natural ingredients).  Repeat dog guests won’t have to worry about redundancy; each month the BarkBox is thoughtfully crafted.  BarkBox is dedicated to supporting the health and happiness of all dogs and donates at least 10% of profits to shelters, rescues and animal welfare organizations.  Rounding out the pet pampering at The Benjamin are some items for furry guests when they take to the streets of New York City including a BarkBox collapsible water bowl, paw wipes and a roll of plastic bags.

  • The Taste of Luxury

The Benjamin, home to Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s all-occasion James Beard Award-winning restaurant, The National, is known to keep guests well fed.  Not wanting to leave Fido or Fluffy out of a proper New York City culinary experience, the hotel is now offering a five-paw (star) in-room pet mini bar.  This veterinarian-approved assortment of Biscuit Tins by Bocce’s Bakery serves up Beef Bourguignon (slow roasted Pat La Frieda beef with sweet carrots and parsley, seasoned to perfection and served in the form of a wonderfully crispy biscuit); Chicken Cordon Bleu (a timeless dish recreated in the form of a gourmet biscuit with roasted antibiotic-free chicken, paired with nitrate-free turkey bacon and topped with fresh cheese); The Elvis (named after one of the King’s favorites, this peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich remake is lower in fat than the classic and made with lean Applegate Farms nitrate-free turkey bacon, potassium-packed bananas and all-natural peanut butter); and Green Juice (biscuits make from vitamin-packed greens: spinach, kale, sweet apples, spirulina, omega-three packed flax seeds and a touch of mint).  To wash it all down is Bowser Beer (a beefy non-alcoholic brown ale with glucosamine to promote healthy joints) and for a sweet treat, Bocce’s The Big Apple Pie (only three simple ingredients in this low-fat dessert biscuit complete with extra cinnamon for extra-fresh pup breath).  Mungo & Maud water bowls, created for dogs with an eye for style and a taste for luxury, are provided in varying sizes to complete the dining experience.

  • Good Health

With health and wellness being of paramount importance, hotel guests will have access to a 24-hour veterinarian line to answer any and all pooch-related questions (Rufus just ate X, what should I do?).  Pet owners simply need to call down to The Benjamin’s concierge team, anytime day or night, and they will be connected to a vet via phone without delay for a complimentary consultation.

At a hotel known for its innovative Sleep Program, top dog beds are called for to ensure dogs get as good a night’s sleep as their masters.  New Mungo & Maud pet beds are sure to have pooches counting bones and snoozing in no time.

All twelve paws crossed, our dream comes true one day, and we get to stay at The Benjamin.

Ritz Kids Dive Into Ocean Preservation & Exploration

We pups love the ocean! Happy loves to chase the seagulls, Lucy chases him and dives right into the waves, and Lady, being Lady, likes to wade in up to her belly. So, we think kids are really going to enjoy the Ritz-Carlton’s new kids global program, partnered with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society (a non-profit organization with the motto, Protect the ocean and you protect yourself), and which builds upon their existing kids’ adventure travel programming  at both city and urban properties. The refined luxury experience for young guests, aged four to 12, provides a differentiated program which engages children to explore the world around them. We think it’s got a great message. The environmental expertise of Ocean Futures Society allows The Ritz-Carlton to craft fascinating experiences that are based on four key pillars:

  • Water: Emphasizing the importance of sea life and health.
  • Land: Encouraging exploration and discovery.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Promoting the environmental health of our planet for the future.
  • Culture:  Exposing young minds to a variety of art forms, including music, local customs and history, as well as cuisine.

“The fun and exciting activities appeal to a child’s innate love of discovery and sense of curiosity.  All kids start out as scientists, constantly asking ‘Why? What’s that? How does it work?’  I have spent my life exploring the natural wonders of the world, seeking to understand how our planet works and how we can better protect it,” said Jean-Michel Cousteau.

About the Book

‘Dogs Are… Just Like You!’ is a children’s picture book narrated by pet therapy dog Gabriel, a Weimaraner, who teaches children about empathy for animals, including how a child must look after his or her pet. Gabriel is also the Founding Dog of Gabriel’s Angels, a pet therapy charity for at-risk children.

Sadly, in May of 2010, Gabriel passed away, but during his ten years as a therapy dog he reached over 10,000 children and left an inspirational legacy of unconditional love and promise for thousands of abused, neglected and at-risk children.

Gabriel’s magical legacy continues with Gabriel’s Angels Pet Therapy Teams actively serving Arizona crisis nurseries, domestic violence and homeless shelters, group homes, residential treatment programs, and targeted school programs.

The program’s goal is to increase the overall sense of well-being and happiness for children in a safe environment, and to build critical core behaviors, such as trust, empathy, respect, tolerance and self-esteem. To learn more about Gabriel’s Angels, please visit GabrielsAngels.org.

Praise For ‘DOGS ARE… JUST LIKE YOU!’

“Emily Randolph beautifully articulates the special bond that exists between children and animals in Dogs Are… Just Like You! and Patti DuBois’ delightful illustrations bring it all to life. By teaching children how to care for a dog, the story teaches children how to care for themselves. They will learn that animals have feelings too and their needs are similar. Therapy Dog Gabriel touched the lives of many at-risk children during his ten years working and taught many of the lessons in this book. It is a must read for children everywhere!” – Pam Gaber, CEO, Gabriel’s Angels

“Gabriel’s Angels and PetSmart share a belief in the positive and lasting impact that pets can have on the lives of children. Through this heartwarming book, children will learn how to be responsible pet parents and enjoy the unconditional love that only pets can provide.”- David Lenhardt, President and Chief Operating Officer, PetSmart.

Thank you for your support!

Well, this is it, fans! I’ve had my hair fluffed and my nails buffed at Grooming Tails, Scottsdale, all in preparation for the festivities around Thanksgiving Brunch at The Phoenician’s Il Terrazzo restaurant.

I’m so excited – and a little nervous – to meet Executive Chef Frank Belosic, as well as Gabriel’s Angels’ therapy dog, Snickers, during The Phoenician’s book signing of Discover The Phoenician with Phoe-Phoe & Friends. I do hope they like me! I’ll be sure and let you know how it goes.

In the meantime, my siblings, Happy and Lucy, and I wish you the very best of Thanksgivings!

Gabriel’s Angels’ New Book, ‘Dogs Are…Just Like You!’, Supports Charity

Pup and Gabriel

By Happy, Lady & Lucy of the King’s Life children’s book series about dog-friendly places

We’re proud to be barking about Gabriel’s Angels, which supports over 13,000 at-risk children using therapy animals. In May 2013, our humans at Happy Lady Books and Patti DeBois, illustrator and animal advocate, published Dogs Are…Just Like You! especially for the charity. The book is used as part of Gabriel’s Angels curriculum, helping to teach empathy, a core behavior, to these special children.

Please purchase the book HERE. 100% of profit goes to Gabriel’s Angels.

Are you considering becoming a Pet Therapy Team with your dog or cat? Reservations are required due to space, so please refer to our Calendar to register or call 602.266.0875 to reserve your place.

Don’t have the right pet or no pet at all?  Need a more periodic volunteering opportunity?  You can contribute in many other ways!  Volunteers are needed for Gabriel’s Angels committees, awareness events and also our major annual fundraising events. These opportunities offer special insight into the organization and the rewards of generating growth so we can serve additional children. If you would prefer to help with administrative tasks, we often need help in our office, too!  Please Contact Us if you desire more information or would like to become a Gabriel’s Angels volunteer.  Thank you for your interest!
